Tucker Gas Processing Equipment has recently been receiving many inquiries for amine plants designed to handle hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and mercaptan removal. One such request of particular interest came for an operation in Eastern Kentucky where non-regenerable absorbents were being used at a significant cost to remove mercaptan.

The new plant proposed by TGPE (and currently under construction) relies on amine and conventional solvents along with a carbon bed technology to remove both heavy and light mercaptans from the lean amine before it re-enters the adsorption column.

One of the basic problems with mercaptan removal has been that the regenerative tower, although reaching temperatures high enough to boil off the carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, will not remove the mercaptans. By utilizing a DEA (diethanolamine) solution in conjunction with special solvents, the lighter mercaptans can be removed. Following the regenerative system, the heavier mercaptans can be taken out by passing the lean amine through a carbon bed technology as it recycles back to the adsorption column. This provides a far more economical solution to the problem than by utilizing non-regenerable absorbent bed processing. Substantial savings result from eliminating the replacement of the absorbent materials and the labor cost for their replacement.
